A country garden in Somerset

This garden is in Somerset, not very far from Bristol, but feels like it’s in the middle of the countryside. The clients wanted more from their garden now that their children had flown the nest - more planting and privacy with less lawn. The picture below shows the garden just a year after we shaped and planted it and my clients are very happy with it!

After setting out the plants, David and I planted it all over a couple of very hot days!

Plenty of border preparation! After shaping the borders, we dug them over and removed a lot of large pieces of old concrete and rocks. Then we added lovely compost to give the plants a good start.

Drawings

The planting plan shows the name of each plant and where it goes. The other three drawings are the initial concept design for the whole garden, an axonometric projection, and the final colour rendered plan. The variety of drawings helps when discussing it all with my clients. I always take a spare copy of the garden design so I can draw any changes or additions the clients might want. Once the design and planting style have been agreed, then I work on the planting plan.

These two images show what the garden used to look like.
