A rejuvenated garden outside Bath

Update June 2023

The garden looks beautiful, with early summer splashes of colour from the alliums and irises. It’s all well maintained by my client and my colleague David York.

More pictures added early June 2021.

This is the secret courtyard garden. The paving was laid last autumn, followed by the planting. My client really loves it and so do I! It’s amazing how the plants survived that long, cold and frosty winter, and now they just want to grow! The whole garden is well cared for by my client and David York of David’s Gardening Services. I took this photo early June 2021.

The stunning colours and markings of Iris sibirica ‘Flight of Butterflies. A beautiful name for a beautiful flower.

The circular lawn is surrounded by beautiful trees and plants. Everything is looking healthy and is growing away. The tree in the central foreground is a multistem Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ (see picture below) and is such a gorgeous shape. It flowered endlessly! After planting all those trees, shrubs and perennials, we also planted plenty of bulbs and you can see Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ standing tall throughout the border. Photo taken early June 2021.

The planting was finished in late November 2020, so now all it needs to do is grow!

We planted 5 new trees. They were wired rootball trees and are great for planting late autumn/winter. This is David York, a trusted partner, planting a multistem Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ (a late flowering cherry). My client told me it was in flower just a few days later!

Deep borders with sweeping curves and the new circular lawn give shape to the garden.

The secret courtyard going in. This is a sunny spot (though not on this drab autumn day!) with fabulous views of massive old trees. The paving and all the groundworks were by Anthony Dear Landscapes.

The acer now has room to breathe (see photo below) and I gave it a gentle prune to bring it back into shape. Now the border needs some beautiful plants! The other existing trees were pruned by Steve Peaple.

Colour rendered, scale drawing of my ideas for the garden. I produce my drawings after discussing all aspects of design with my clients. This includes what they want from their garden, their budget, the feel they are after, and then I add my creativity and knowledge.

The garden before. It was overgrown and full of plants my client didn’t want. In the middle of this picture is a beautiful acer but it’s being overwhelmed by everything else. We spent several days clearing and the garden revealed itself!
